Introduction to Falls Risk and Prevention

Course type: Online short course

Duration: 45 minutes

Assessment: Five multiple-choice questions, Assignments, Case study

Target participants: Mobilicare drivers, medical concierges, caregivers and members of the public interested in falls prevention

Course Synopsis

Introduction to Falls Risk and Prevention is an awareness course explaining why falls occur and how everyday actions can help reduce the risk of injury, particularly among older persons, individuals with disabilities and people with limited mobility. Participants will explore common personal, medical, environmental and situational risk factors associated with falls. The course introduces practical precautions for assisting passengers and clients during pick-up, transfer, walking, vehicle entry and exit, healthcare visits and other mobility-related activities.

The course also explains how to recognise hazards, communicate respectfully, encourage safe use of mobility aids and respond appropriately when a person loses balance or falls. Emphasis is placed on working within the participant’s role, avoiding unsafe manual handling and seeking professional or emergency assistance when necessary.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this course, participants should be able to:

1. Explain why falls are a significant safety concern, especially for older persons and individuals with limited mobility.

2. Identify common personal, medical, medication-related, behavioural and environmental factors that may increase falls risk.

3. Recognise common hazards at homes, vehicles, healthcare facilities and public locations.

4. Perform a simple visual safety check before assisting a person to move.

5. Apply basic precautions during walking, transfers, boarding and alighting from a vehicle.

6. Communicate clearly and respectfully before providing mobility assistance.

7. Recognise the importance of correctly selected and maintained footwear and mobility aids.

8. Describe actions that may increase injury risk, including rushing, pulling, lifting without training or attempting to stop a fall unsafely.

9. Respond appropriately following a fall, including avoiding unnecessary movement, checking for urgent warning signs and seeking suitable assistance.

10. Identify when concerns should be reported to a family member, healthcare professional, Mobilicare or emergency services.

Assessment and Completion

Participants must complete all course content and submit the five-question assessment, essay, assignment and case study. Completion confirms introductory awareness of falls risk and prevention; it does not qualify a participant to conduct a clinical falls assessment or perform specialised patient handling.

If a fall results in loss of consciousness, serious bleeding, breathing difficulty, severe pain, suspected head, neck, back or hip injury, or an inability to move safely, contact 999 immediately.
